I have been in Selbu for two days. Selbu is a village a little more than one hour by car south east from Trondheim, and it is the land of the knitted Selbu rose. Here is what wikipedia writes about this traditional knitting pattern:
Marit Guldsetbrua Emstad (born 1841) from Selbu has been nicknamed "the mother of Selbustrikk" because she may have been the first who provided mitten Selburoses to Husfliden in Trondheim in 1897. She may have taken inspiration from old knitting patterns, wood carving and other crafts. Similar patterns are also found in older knitting pattern books from Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany in the 16th-18th century.
Look closely at the knitting the woman is working on, and you will se the rose.
I was in Selbu for work meetings, and lucky for me, meetings where I could work on my knitting (more of that later). As always we had a tight program, but on the second day I ate my lunch pretty fast and drove over to the village center where I know they have a yarn store.
There I also found this cute statue, a mother teaching her daughter to knit. The title of the statue is
morsarvin
which can be translated the inheritance from the mother, or maternal inheritance.
Lovely, isn´t it :-)
I have a couple of more Selbu posts hidden in my sleeve, so please come back for them later.
