In the time of the mittens

Autumn is knocking on the door, warmer cloths are needed and I have started to knit up a storm of mittens. Mostly for toddlers, design to suit when playing in kindergarten. A perfect way to use left over yarn. I started the first pair almost two weeks ago, while on a work trip up north to Tromsø. Two colours of wool, needles and a little book to write down the pattern, kind of a knit as you go.

A double cuff, to protect the small fingers from the cold snow, and to keep the mitten safe on the hand. 

One mitten finished, second one on the needles. Left hand, right hand, opposite colours.

First pair done, and there is enough yarn for another one.

 

I have been too busy on instagram

Since I started my knitting account on instagram, @brittarnhildsstrikkedagbok, I have been too busy there, and almost forgotten "maskerade". But instagram, though it is a medium I love to use (I have four different account there) is different from blogging, and while I was shooting photos for a new pair of mittens today, I suddenly realised how much I miss my knitting blog. So here I am :-)

I am knitting up a storm of mittens for the moment, and when we went out hiking to look for foxberries this morning, I got the idea to let the berries inspire some new mittens, bilberry mittens and foxberry mittens. I ran up the stairs to my knitting studio to see if I had leftover yarn in blu, red and green, found the correct needles and took it all with my (in the backpack Terje was carrying)

Terje is much better at picking berries than I am, so while he picked (well, I also picked some), I sat down to knit. First out will be a pair of bilberry mittens (blueberry blåbær mittens) as we call the blue berries blåbær/blueberries. Then there will be green and red foxberries next.

The pilgrim mittens

I have been on a pilgrimage for two days with my colleagues. At our final destination we were met with a fantastic lunch, and then shown the little village museum. In there I found a box filled with hand knitted mittens.

There were dozens of them, all knitted by a 91 years old woman.

The cross in the middle of a four circled knot, is the pilgrim symbol in Norway. Isn´t it lovely the way it is knitted into the mitten?

I wonder if I can do this when I am 91.

Of course I had to buy a pair :-)

 

The land of the Selbu mittens

A blogging friend, Ardi from Seattle, has been here to visit us for a week. We wanted to show her as much as possible of our beautiful country, and one day I took her up to Selbu, the village of, the land of the lovely Selbu mitten.

We came early, just after the knitting shop had opened, and hade time enough to walk around, gatheing inspiration, enjoying the great work of knitting women........and may be a man or two? I don´t know.

I wanted to buy this book, but the one they had was not for sale :-(

So instead I walked around, enjoying the colours.
