As Joseph was a-walking
He heard an angel sing
This night shall be born
Our heavenly king

 

I have been to a concert in Hallgrims Church today. Among the songs the choir sang was Joseph and the angel. A beautiful hymn, based on a handwritten script from 1396.

He neither shall be born
in house nor in stall.
Nor in the place of paradise.
But in an oxen´s stall.

He neither shall be clothed
in purple nor in pall.
But in fair linen
as uses babies all.

He neither shall be rocked
in silver nor in gold.
But in a wooden cradle
that rocks upon the mold.

He neither shall be christened
in white wine nor in red.
But in the fair spring water
with which we were christened.
