May 17th, Norways Constitutional Day and the day all Norwegians wear their traditional outfits, their bunad is not far ahead. A few weeks ago I stumbled upon a pattern for a knitted bunad for boys and sent my daughter a messages asking her if she wanted me to knit one for Leander. A smile and a yes came as a reply.
Then I remembered that when our two boys were small, they were born in 1982 and 1984, I had bunads for them, I had bought one for Torgeir from age 2+, and sewn and knitted one for Øystein size one year.
The smaller one is my own design. Bottlegreen wool knickers, two different shirts in a kind of Austrian dirndl-fabric, and handknitted socks. Oh, how proud I was when my baby wore it!
In a box down in the basement I found the two toddler outfits and today I tried them on Leander.
Unfortunately the handmade one was already too small for him. But the other one, which consists of black knickers and a red vest, suited him perfectly. I will need to knit a pair of new socks though, and may be also a black jacket, as middle of May can still be quite cold here.
The handmade bunad will have to wait for another little boy.
Oh my, little boys in bunads - what could be more charming. ( and when did you have the time!!) I want to make one for my grand daughter (sew, not knit). She too is One and half, but I will wait until she is a bit older.

How adorable, Britt-Arnhild. So happy you saved them and that one of them still fits Leander. Hope you post a picture when you are all dressed in your bunads for May 17th celebration.

So pleased you kept some of your children's clothes. I used to hand smock dresses for the girls I looked after. Now I have a bag of those in my attic. Already one has been passed onto the next generation.
