Beauty in a wet garden

I am tired of the sun´s hide and seek game. Now I let her play in solitude, turn my back to her and find my own games to play.

To count beauties in the garden.

We have the awning out and is dry under it while we have our coffee. The Norwegian word of awning is markise. I didn´t know the English word and had to google it. Google translate gave me awning, a word completely new to me. To make sure it was the right word I googled awning and this is what came up:  An awning is a type of supplemental roof or cover that helps control intense sun exposure and heat that occurs both indoors and outdoors

Haha, our markise is never in use to control sun, nor heath, but it is perfect to keep us dry from rain :-)

Well, rain or shine, it is not difficult to find beauty in the garden just now.

I think I love this game.

Collecting lemons, and a guessing game.

Jane, you are right, I am collecting my lemons, saving them for a sweet, vitamin filled lemonade which will save me through another winter :-) And with the wonderful weather we are having these days we almost live out in the garden. Garden living is good for the winter life saving lemonade you know!

We are heading for the cabin, while Marta has to stay at home for her math exam. Poor her. Hopefully she find time to water my green house plants.

 

The photos in this post are from Ninfa, the medieval garden south of Rome which we visited in April. The last photo is a guessing game. What is the little house on the wall? A postcard for the first one with a correct answer.

Wordfeud, a Christmas epidemic?

Christmas is a time for games. Card games and board games. Monopoly used to be a favorite, then Settlers and Rummy took over.

Untill this year that is.

On the morning of Christmas Eve Ingrid and Marta had occupied our two comfortable armchairs. Wrapped in their duvets they were ready for hours of watching television. All the films which are sent every year only on this day. A tradition not to be broken.

I was busy in the kitchen, and from there I had a good view over to where the girls sat. To my astinishment they both were busy with their cell phones, and from time to time looking at each other laughing.

I was curious: "Hey, what are the two of you doing?"

"Mamma, we are playing Wordfued, which is like Scrabble played on our android phones"

Playing games on the phone? A phone is for calling, for texting, and these days also for photograhing, for skyping, for reading emails, sometimes even for blogging. But playing games? No that´s not for me....

.....or rather, that WAS not for me.

I have started to play Wordfeud, and though I´v lost every single game I´ve played so far, I am hooked!

At mass on Christmas Eve I sat together wth three young men, all of them unknown to me, all of them busy with their phones before mass started. I loooked at the one closest to me, and couldn´t stop saying: "I see you are busy playing the same game as my kids do". The young man looked at me, smiling; "Yes, we are playing Wordfeud. Everyone does these days. I even have a friend who plays Wordfeud on his mobile with his grandma. What do you say about that?

Can you see who this is?

I took the photo a couple of days ago, while at the Synod of the Church of Norway.

A Christmas gift will be sent out to the first one with the correct answer. Another gift goes to the most creative/funny story connected to the flower arrangement.

I used to travel with guidebooks, ........and a guessing game.

 

I used to travel to Venezia with travel books. Loades of them in my suitcase, every day filling my backpack with several when I walked out to explore La Serenissima.

I still bring alot of guidebooks and novels set in the city. But I leave them in Nati House for early mornings and late night reading and for travel diary writing. The city is becoming more and more mine, I want to see her through my own eyes, I don't need all those guidebooks anymore. Well, at least I don't need them all the time.

 

One reason for this is my frequent visits to Venezia, another is the friends I have made here through the years.

Yesterday we met up with a few.

 

Can you remember the first time I met dottore Carlo Feli?Just by accident. A friendship was knotted for life then.

Today I met him again, this time with Terje and Marta as well. Carlo took us on a two hours' walk in the city, along calles I've never been, pointing out details I've never seen, a secret garden, an animal sign on a palazzio, a church for the old seamen.....

 

After our morning walk we were ready for a looooong lunch, spaghetti pomodoro for Marta (as always, almost.....), pizza for me and Terje. But soon we were fit for more adventures. My very own glass blower were waiting for us, and with Marta as our map reader, we soon found his workshop.

 

Mauro will be moving his workshop in a couple of weeks, and as soon as we entered his place, well, after the wonderful Italian friendship kisses, he wondered if we wanted to walk with him over to his new place? Of course we did. There is absoutely nothing like walking in Venezia with a local. You walk fast and you walk through small calles you never knew excisted. With wonderful sights around every corner.

 

Next time in Venezia I'll visit Mauro in his new place.

Logical or just chaos with math

When we are gathered around the table words dance like ping pong balls in all directions. Everybody has their stories to tell, their episodes to embellish, tales to share ...........quizzes and puzzles sprinkle it all.

During our party Sunday night we gave the guests a puzzle and here it comes for you as well:

If the earth is precicely round and you draw a rope around the Equator, then add one meter to the length of the rope, how far out from the earth will the rope then run?
