Here in Norway we call the last Sunday before Christnas svartsøndag, or Black Sunday. Sunday´s during the rest of the year are to be free from work, but on the last Sunday before the holidays you were allowed to do all the work you needed to get everything ready for Christmas. Though I am no fan at all of Black Fridays, I love Black Sunday, svartsøndag. All the last minute work you do has a touch of anticipation. You cook and bake the last minute food, you clean the house to make it shine for the holidays which is almost knocking on your door now, and slowly, slowly the purple colour of advent leaves to give room for red, and for white.
We started already yesterday. I guess I can´t call the Saturday for Black Saturday, but Terje and I were busy from early morning till late night. As you can see we have no snow this year, it looks like it will not be a white Christmas, but still, on this darkest period of the year, we need all the daylight we can get and clean windows are essential.
My grandma Olga had the world´s best recipe for sitronøl, lemon beer, a kind of sweet drink made of water, sugar, yeast, lemon and vørterøl (some kind og root beer) Terje makes several porsions every Christmas, the first one a week ago.
I was cleaning the ground floor, but was not too busy, so I had time to stop for photos now and then. I was also baking breads and making our traditional spiced herring, and suddenly I forgot all about photos.......
....... until we sat down late at night to taste the still warm bread, the herring and the first bottle of sitronøl. The first taste of Christmas.
