As a child I used to have a Ms Santa workshop in my room all through December. Christmas gifts were produced day and night. The door was locked, the key hidden and I had so many secrets I hardly knew which foot to stand on. As I grew up, part of this tradition continued, making homemade gifts was a natural part of my advent celebration. Knitting, sewing, quilting, making cards, baking, cooking marmelade, filling jars with herring, writing tales. The list was long, the nights always too short.
I don´t have this list any more. There are few handmade gifts leaving The House in the Woods these days. But up in my studio I still have a basked with skeins of yarn in red, green and white. The old knitting needles are still running a few projects. I am knitting Christmas stockings. No Christmas Eve guests are to leave without his or her own handknitted stocking.
The first one I made this year was for our newborn grandson. As I made it before he was born and I didn´t know what his name would me, I knitted in the nickname we used on him during our daughter´s pregnancy - Lille Krøll, Little Curl.
