Two years ago we started a new advent tradition, one which already the first year became a favorite. Marta and a friend were going to Kenya that winter, on a tour arranged by The Salvation Army here in Trondheim, and as the preparations went on, we were asked to help as volunteers at different events, one of them as guards at the Army´s Christmas Crib at the marketplace downtown, where people can give - money or gifts.
Last year we had agreed to stand guard again, but then Terje´s father died (one year ago yesterday) and we had to cancel. But this year we were back again.
For one hour we stood there in the cold, warmed by people´s generosity. Smiling, wishing Merry Christmas, drinking gløgg hot enough to burn our tongue, looking at the busy activity at the Christmas market.
Over the years the Christmas market in Trondheim has grown to be the biggest one in Norway. When our guarding hour were finished on Sunday we were too cold to walk around, and since then I have been ill, but hopefully I will be able to visit the market this coming weekend.
