@brittarnhild
I have been searching through my old Advent letters from 2003 again today, and here is what I found from the 13th of December:
What great fun it is to celebrate with kids. Marta and
Mathilde were up early. As we know that the older
siblings in the house want to sleep late though, we
decided not to walk around the house to wake them up,
but to make breakfast in the dining room. Torgeir and
dh came up for that, the two others slept. Though
tonight 19 years old Øystein asked why we hadn't woke
him up. Did you want us to? I asked. No, he said, I am
happy that I could sleep, but I thought you would wake
me anyway :-)
I have two Santa Lucia dresses, one is actually a
nightgown from the the American Pleasant Company, the
other one I made myself many years ago. And as several
of you have mentioned The American Girl Dolls I must
rush to tell that we have the Kirsten doll, and her
Santa Lucia outfit. Both the doll and the outfit is
given to us by some very good friends in USA. So
Kirsten has been with us all day.
We ate lussekatter for breakfast, and also had hot
chocolate, so the day was just perfect! And after our
own breakfast I and the girls went over to our two
laydies next door. The girls sang for them, and
brought lussekatter, and we were invited indoors to
see their wonderful Christmas decorations. Their house
is like a fairytale for two small girls.
But now Marta and Mathilde had had enough of Santa
Lucia, so when my brother and little Benjamin came a
few hours later and wanted to taste lussekatter, they
didn't want to dress up again. Instead they found
their warm clothes and ski boots and went out for
skiing and playing in the snow. Is there anything more
beautiful than two real angels with red cheeks making
snow angels, laughing and playing.....
I wrapped the last gifts which had to be sent, wrote a
few more Christmas letters.....and what else have I
done today? Not much I think, only some reading and
knitting, alot of telephone chatting with friends,
and....oh, I almost forgot. I have moved my old
secretaire / writing desk from the living room and
down to my studio. Some time ago we got an old organ
from my parents, and have been wondering alot where to
place it. In the end we decided to have it in the
livingroom, and instead move the secretaire (am I
using the right English word, or? In Norwegina we call
it a skatoll!) I am very, very pleased with the
result. The organ is perfect in the living room, with
three small Christmas quilts hang on the wall over it,
the secrataire is perfect down here. This studio has
been kind of a "problem" room in the house since we
moved in two years ago, a room for storage and all the
left over furniture, but it becomes more and more my
room with my style, which means I am spending more and
more time down here.
We have also been creative today. Marta and Mathilde
tried to make snow lanterns outdoors, but found that
the wind wouldn't alow the candles to shine. So they
came in and found two glass jars which they decorated
with coloured tissue paper and ribbons.....o la la,
the most beautiful lanterns. And tonight I helped
Marta making a decoration using moss and twigs she has
gathered in the forest during the weekly trips her
class is having at schoo. She also used a silver
pyramid candle, two snowmen from my collection and an
old and rusty horse shoe she has from somewhere. The
result is rather country looking.....again and again I
am amazed when I see Marta's creativity, she really
has a talent.
It is Saturday night. Marta is asleep, the three
oldest are out with friends. Only the two "old ones",
me and dh at home. We will may be watch a movie, make
dough for gingerbread baking tomorrow, and have a
quiet evening.
Happy week-end.

The Britt Arnhilds Advent is also about Santa Lucia of course, Leander baking lussekatter, I talk about saffron and I share an old Italian Santa Lucia Day tradition:
