When Jane and Lanny first came to Norway they met a young Norwegian couple. They started to tell them about all the fabulous places they were going to visit, and Jane ended her tale with telling them that they were going to Moi. The couple was quiet for some time but then asked "Why Moi????"
I have spent part of every summer for 32 years here (except the summer 22 years ago when Ingrid was born), and I know perfectly well Why Moi!
An important part of Why Moi is the sun and the view from the terrace.
A main part is my father in law.
Jane and Lanny have been here for a few days, and already know A LOT about Why Moi.
Today my father in law decided he wanted to make them a wooden plate, and they were allowed to come down to his workshop to watch and to film the whole process.
A piece of art from father in law's hands is never finished utill it is properly blessed. On the plate he wanted a quote from the Bible, and he spent a long time with his old leather Bible searching for the right words. And in prayers.
Then the words needed to be burnt into the wood.

A wooden memory, a piece of art, to bring back to California.

It is late afternoon when I write this. I am sitting out on the veranda enjoying the view I love so much. Jane is in the kitchen with father in law, learning how to make his special potato salad. He knows may be 2 words in English, she knows 5 words in Norwegian. They both know the language of love and the language of the body. A few times they come out here to ask me for a word or two. Most of the time they are chatting happily together.
