Terje's birthday is in the beginning of January, and I had originally planned to give him a week-end at Røros as a birthday present. Then I realised that Ingrid had two handball matches in the region this week-end. I decided to give Terje his present a month early, and booked a hotelroom for three, Marta went with us, Ingrid travelled with her team.
Readers of my blog know Røros quite well now, after I have blogged about it so many times during the past months. None of you know Røros at Christmas time though, which is quite something else :-) This old mining village, up in the mountains two hours south of Trondheim, is listed in UNs World Heritage List, and is worth a visit any time during the year.
We had hoped to bring our cross country skis, but not even at Røros is there enough snow for that so far this winter. But there was a thin film of snow and ice, and the roads were slippy - holding hands was a must :-)
What I always do when I am at Røros is walking around shooting photos. Strangely enough the lovely church, Bergstaden Ziir, is not shown on the first photo today, which is from the oldest street in the village. But except from that Bergstaden Ziir can be seen on most of my photos.
We came up Friday afternoon, and had some time for Christmas shopping in the main street before going to Vertshuset, where we had booked a table for three. When we had finished eating, we realised that all the shops were still open, and alot of people were out in the dark streets. This was a santa claus - night at Røros with alot of activities, horses with sledges, reindeer out in the street and "nisser", or santas around everyt corner. Marta bought a red santa's hat and right away became one of the group.
The morning mist at Røroe can be spectacular. We started Saturday morning with more Christmas shopping before going to the sport's hall watching Ingrid play handball. Afterwards we were invited to lunch in the most charming bed and breakfast at Røros, Ertscheidergården, but that's a story for tomorrow.
