We went to the theatre last night to see Henrik Ibsen´s Peer Gynt. Of course this is a well known play here in Norway, as in much of the world, and I have seen it several times. But never anything like it is played at Trøndelag Teater this fall.
Peer is an old man suffering a heart attack and while he is in hospital, recovering or dying (?) his life is unfolding in his mind. Everything was there, Peer´s lies, the peeling of the onion, the Mountain King, Mother Aase, Solveig´s Dance. All set in a kind of up to date political setting. Very interesting.
After last night it is time to go back to the original story. Though I will do it in a "new" way, I will read it in English.
When I was in India in 2008 a very precious gift was given to me by my Indian mother Carolyn, The Works of Ibsen. A beautiful leatherbounb book from 1928. The book was given to Carolyn and her husband Hossy in 1955 with an inscription "From our library to your library. This book is affectionally dedicated to you and yours. Mr. and Mrs Ernest D. Dolumbus "(?, some letters are hard to decipher). When Carolyn gave me the book she wrote "And now back to Norway from where it came. Love from the Parpias. 2008. Mysore"
So you see, I have some perfect reading for a perfect Saturday night.
