A friend of mine moved to Myanmar, and I didn´t hesitate long to ask her for book suggestions. "Tru From the Land of Green Ghosts" was her reply.
The book is a kind of autobiography. Pascal Khoo Twhe grew up in a remote village in the Myanmar countryside, a member of a tribe famous for their "giraffe-necked" women. Pascal´s grandfather was the leader of the tribe and in the 1930ies he captured an Italian Jesuit who came to spend his life in the village, sharing his Christian belief, giving all the children Christian names.
Pascal was supposed to study to become a priest, but changed into English studies after developing a love of the English language listening to BBS World Service. He became a student in Mandalay and was there when the cruel military regine reign the country. His girlfriend was raped and killed by the soldiers and Pascal, who until then hadn´t given politics much thought, became part of the jungle guerrilla army.
During his years as a student in Mandalay he had met the British Dr. John Casey, a Cambridge don visiting Mandalay, and this meeting whould change his life forever.
The books opens a window to a country and a way of living I knew very little about. Written with an amazing insight of a native who has the talent to see his life with the eyes of an outsider.
