I have already written about the first book by Sarah Moss which I read, Names of the Sea. After finishing it I knew I wanted to read more from Moss´pen, and a search on amazon gave a couple of results. I bought Night Waking, and have read it the past week.
The book is about Anna Bennett who is spending the summer on a fictional Hebridean island with her husband who is busy with his research work, and their two small boys. The youngest of the boys awakes every night, giving Anna too little sleep. And while trying to cope with her everydays, she also has her own personal goal, to write a book.
One day, while planting apple trees in their garden, Anna and her husband find a buried baby skeleton, and now Anna not only has to struggle with the present and her lack of sleep, her future and what to do with her life, but also the past.....who was this baby and why did it die.
I had a hard start with Night Waking. I had loved Names of the Sea so much, and was a little disapponted, as it took a long time to actually get anywhere. But once I had founght myself over the first obstacle, I got caught by the story, and could hardly put the book down.
Not as good as Names of the Sea, but still a great pastime read.
.....and some day I would love to move to a small island.....
