Back in 1987 two books were published by Den Norske Bokklubben (The Norwegian Book Club) The books were Jane Somer´s dagbøker, 1 and 2, or The Diary of a Good Neighbour, and If the Old Could......, as they are called originally.
The books immediately found their way to the deepest of my heart. I guess there are two explanations to that - the first one fully shows Doris Lessing´s (or Jane Somers´?) profound love of London, a love I share and have shared ever since I went there for the first time when I was 15, spending the summer in South England at a summer school. The second one, the bond which was created between Jane Somers and the old woman Maudie. I worked as a deacon at that time, my main occupation was to visit old, lonely people, mostly women. Many of them just like Maudie.
For almost two decades I read the two books at least once a year (I do that when there is a book I love in a very special way), but now they have been gathering dust down in my basement library for a long time.
Gathering dust, until today that is.
I have picked them out of the shelves, I have blown away the dust and I will reread them.
Perfect timing.
Marta and I are going to London in a few days, and in between shopping, museums, a musical, coffee shops, book stores and meeting a dear blog reader, I hope to walk in Green Park, with Jane Somers, aka Doris Lessing.
