It is my last day in Ethiopia and I have almost finished The Lure of the Honey Bird. But I do not despair. For the long flights I have another book waiting; The Chains of Heaven.
Here is what the back cover says:
Few inhabited regions of the world remain quite so unusual or remote as the Ethiopian highlands - and few writers respond to such places quite like Philip Marsden.
Walking hundreds of miles through a landscape of cavernous gorges, tabletop maountains and semi-desert, he encounters monks and hermits, rebels and farmers, people whose spiritual passions reveal a reckless disregard for the material. In spare and glinting prose, The Chains of Heaven celebrates the ageless rewards of the open road and people for whom the mythic and the everyday are inextricably joined.
