I booked our week in Tenerife a couple of months ago, almost on an impulse. We had talked about going somewhere to the sun in winter, we had tried to find a place and a time, but somehow nothing came out of it. Then, one day at work, I realized that my timetable was filling up. If we should be able to do something, we had to do it fast! I flipped through my calendar and then I phoned Terje: " What do you think about Tenerife from January 5th?" Ten minutes later I was on my way down to the travel agency.
There I discovered that a week in Tenerife in early January was a lot cheaper than I had imagine, probably due to low season, so I also booked a car for the whole week, and we decided to use the opportunity to explore more than we had managed to do last time. In this exploring we added a two day trip around the island.
One day late, because of my 24 hours in bed (by the way, I now know that it was probably not food poisining, but a bug a lot of islanders also got), we started our tour Thursday morning. As you have already seen, Thursday was a rainy day. I will write more about parts of that day later, Anne, yes pyramids :-) in Tenerife,Spain...... I´ll explain that also.......
We had not booked a hotel for this two day trip, and the island is not big, so we could anyway go back to our place in Puerto Santiago if needed. For a long time we thought that had to be the solution. Actually, out of the special holiday resorts we could see no hotels at all. My dream of a small, British like B&B slowly faded, though we did not give up, and up on the north coast, after leaving the capital, we drove up and down the steepest roads you can imagine, on our search. Seeing a lot of dramatical, spectacular sights though.
"I am not sure this is any use" Terje said, while maneuvering the car out from another dead end.
For the hundreth time I looked down at the map in my lap. "Look" I said, "we are close to Puerto Cruz, that´s where we searched for the botanical garden three years ago. Do you remember, that place has a lot of hotels. Let´s go there for a last try, shall we?"
There we found a hotel.
And we found a lot more!
Next time I think we will stay in Puerto Cruz for the whole week :-)
Our hotel turned out to be situated only a stone´s throw from the botanical garden, and we celebrated our morning by a long walk there.
Jardin Botánico was founded in 1788 by King Carlos III as an acclimatication garden for plants from the tropic. Early January is probably not the best time of the year to visit, but for us it was like a fairytale, this time as it was three years ago.
I first learned about this garden after reading one of my favorite female travel writers and her visit to Hijuela del Jardin Botánico, an offshot of the big garden. We never found the "offshot" last time. We did yesterday.
But that´s another tale, for another day,
on Books on the Menu.
Thanks for following me here, there, everywhere :-)
